Carcassonne is located in the plain of the Aude between historic trade routes, linking the Atlantic to the Mediterranean Sea and the Massif Central to the Pyrénées. Its strategic importance was quickly recognized by the Romans, who occupied its hilltop until the demise of the Western Roman Empire. In the fifth century, it was taken over by the Visigoths, who founded the city. Within three centuries, it briefly came under Islamic rule.
Pearl of the Vermillion Coast, the little town of Collioure harbors many maritime and architectural treasures. Its Catalan port filled with colorful boats, its medieval heritage, the houses’ wonderful rainbow colors and the emblematic pink-domed bell-tower make it a picture postcard place.
While walking through its pedestrian streets, you’ll understand why Picasso, Matisse, and Derain set some of their paintings there. You’ll be able to follow the route of Fauvism, by looking for the 17 pictures of Matisse and Derain meandering in the alleys.
The incredibly picturesque and enchanting scene you’ll witness is going to make you want to see more: the small pebbly beaches, the café terraces, the Royal Castle by the sea and its amazing history.
