Picnics are so much fun! Don’t you agree? It’s the perfect moment to catch up with your friends while being able to truly relax and enjoy some good food and fresh drinks. When the sun’s out, picnicking is one of the most accessible and cheapest activities to do. That’s why many people spread out their blankets in the best spots to have their lunch while chilling in the sun. Curious about where you should picnic in Barcelona? We’ve handpicked some of the best locations for you!
Parc de Cervantes
Out of all places in the city, this one probably is the greenest and at the same time one of the most colourful parks. That’s due to the roses which are spread throughout the entire park. Since there’s a lot of green patch areas, you’ll have no trouble finding the ideal picnic spot. Starting from May, the 11.000 rose bushes – full of blooming flowers – will bedazzle you with their scent. Would you like to enjoy your lunch among friends in an environment with an intense aroma of roses? This location in the district of Les Corts will 100% satisfy you
Parc del Castell de l’Oreneta
This park lies in the elegant and peaceful district of Sarrià-Sant Gervasi. However, you will not be bored in this place. Apart from picnicking, you can take on your friends in a game of table tennis. It’s the perfect way to burn off some of the calories after having feasted on your delicious lunch. Our recommendation is to go picnic at the highest point of the park. There you can take shelter in the shade of the trees while enjoying the best views.
Jardins del Mirador de l’Alcalde
This garden on the mountain of Montjuïc doesn’t do anything but invite you to spread out a blanket and have a picnic in one of its rest areas. Afterwards, you can dip your feet in the ponds to cool off. This location that includes a panoramic view of Barcelona, is open from 10 am to about 7 pm.
Jardins de Mossèn Cinto Verdaguer
This garden is located near the previous garden. I guess you could say the mountain of Montjuïc has a lot to offer. The place features large swaths of grass for you to have your picnic at. Water plants, flower beds and a small lake is what you’ll find here. Also good to know is that the shade of the trees is highly sought after here. Are you someone who doesn’t hold out in the sun for long? Then try to come on weekdays because on weekends those spots are quickly taken. In any case, best bring a hat just to be sure.
Parc de la Creueta del Coll
If you visit this park, there are 3 things you must see. The feature that probably draws you to the park is the large pond that functions as a shallow public pool during summer. Absolutely delightful for refreshing yourself. But don’t forget to check out the other 2 features this park offers. The ‘Elogi de l’Aigua’ is a 50-ton structure suspended on cables that will blow your mind. After your lunch, you can help get your food digested by hiking up to the viewpoint where you can calm down on the benches.
Parc de Diagonal Mar
This one is not your average park. Apart from the unique-looking water-themed design, this place is well-known for its slides that can be enjoyed by people of all ages. There is always something to look at while you are eating lunch with friends in this perfect picnic spot, surrounded by roses.
Parc Central de Nou Barris
Being the second largest park in the city, the place has big stretches of lawn. Ideal for you to search that spot that will take your picnic to another level. Don’t find it comfortable to sit on the ground? (Even thought it’s the only real way to have an authentic picnic in Barcelona…) This park has your back. By providing picnic tables in a beautiful wooded area, your needs for a foreseen place are met. Will you soon be picnicking at this location that is full of surprises? Not only does it have the largest concentration of palm trees in Barcelona, but also the Dosrius aqueduct which is a natural spring that shoots water up.
Parc de la Ciutadella
This list would not be complete if we did not include this famous park. Nevertheless, it is not immediately our first recommendation for picnics as it is less quiet due to its popularity. However, there’s plenty of things to do. You can go rent some rowboats to paddle on the stunning lake, admire the majestic waterfall or try and spot the Northern Mockingbird. You know, that bird from those “Hunger Games” movies!
You’ve probably gotten all excited about having a picnic in one of these best picnic spots in. Well, we can’t blame you. To top off your picnic in Barcelona, we advise you to fill up your picnic basket with a good Spanish wine, some Manchego cheese, Spanish olives, and of course the famous Spanish ham, Jamón Serrano. You can also buy some fruit in the shops close to the parks or at La Boqueria. Have fun and enjoy your meal!
